Carlos Dinares Tip #327: ROWING and CREATIVITY

Have you ever had the chance to read this:

“At the end of the presentation someone asked whether he thought they should do some market research to see what customers wanted. “No” he replied, “because customers don’t know what they want until we’ve show them”

What is creativity?

Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.

In order to be creative, you need to be able to view things in new ways or from a different perspective. Among other things, you need to be able to generate new possibilities or new alternatives. Tests of creativity measure not only the number of alternatives that people can generate but the uniqueness of those alternatives.

Why is creativity so low among the rowing world today?

In today’s world it is hard to be wrong, it is not well accepted. Because of that we cannot guess or think outside of the box. It is clear that we are educating people away from their creative capacity. It is more and more difficult to find people with original ideas that have values.

Like intelligence tests, Torrance’s test—a 90-minute series of discrete tasks, administered by a psychologist—has been taken by millions worldwide in 50 languages. Yet there is one crucial difference between IQ and CQ scores. With intelligence, there is a phenomenon called the Flynn effect—each generation, scores go up about 10 points. Enriched environments are making kids smarter. With creativity, a reverse trend has just been identified and is being reported for the first time here: American creativity scores are falling.

It is obvious that we are all doing the same. We all know there is more but there is fear to change and the unknown. We live in a world where many of us have lost the ability to create new ideas and ways to do things. We compare and are stuck on what is here without having the ability to produce new original ideas.

Creativity is the most important trait that a person can possess. It allows you to create meaning, importance and curiosity.

Institutionalized education kills creativity? Is the traditional way of schooling in this society a major hindrance to creativity?
